Green Data Center

A Green Data Center is a secure facility for the storage and management of business data in which the mechanical, lighting, electrical and computer systems are designed for maximum energy efficiency and minimum environmental impact.

Defining traits of a green data center may include:

  • Minimizing the carbon footprint of the building
  • Choosing low-emission building materials, carpets and paints
  • Designing and implementing a sustainable landscape
  • A wide-ranging recycling strategy
  • Installing catalytic converters on backup generators
  • Employing alternative energy technologies such as photovoltaics, heat pumps and evaporative cooling
  • Using hybrid or electric company vehicles

While the up-front costs to build and earn certification for a green data center or other facility can be expensive, long-term cost savings can be realized through operational efficiencies. Another advantage of green data centers is their ability to attract top talent by offering employees a healthy, comfortable work environment. Green facilities also create positive impressions among members of the community.

In addition to existing financial and earth-friendly benefits, there is growing pressure for governments to offer green incentives to encourage the creation and maintenance of ecologically responsible technologies.
