In a liquid-cooled data center, heat transfer between the technology cooling system (TCS) that circulates liquid to the IT equipment and the facility water system (FWS) used for heat rejection occurs via cooling distribution units (CDUs). CDUs are essential components that distribute coolant evenly throughout the system, regulating and controlling the flow of the working fluid to maintain precise temperature and flow rate parameters.
CDUs play a critical role in high density data center applications by providing closely controlled coolant delivery and precise management of the liquid cooling system. These units effectively manage increasing heat loads from power-intensive workloads while simultaneously reducing the power consumption associated with cooling. The integration of CDUs enhances overall system efficiency and reliability through built-in redundancy measures.
From a sustainability perspective, CDUs contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and the data center’s carbon footprint. By optimizing the data center cooling system’s performance, CDUs facilitate the achievement of sustainability goals, such as reducing Scope 2 data center emissions associated with cooling energy consumption.
As data centers transition to liquid cooling to support next-generation processors and GPUs, CDUs will become increasingly important in ensuring efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly operations.
