Scope 2 data center emissions encompass a data center’s indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, such as those created in the production of the electricity used to power the data center.

As data centers face exponentially growing demand driven by AI and other compute-intensive applications, data center power requirements are increasing massively. The industry is in the midst of what ASHRAE calls the ‘Power Wars Era’. While chip performance continues to increase, it now comes with rising power consumption. More computation requires more watts.

Transitioning from air cooling to liquid cooling for these power-hungry next-generation processors provides an opportunity to substantially reduce Scope 2 data center emissions. Liquid cooling is fundamentally more efficient than air cooling, allowing more heat transfer per unit of energy. It enables increased economization, higher chilled water temperatures, and improved CPU efficiency—all of which reduce the amount of electricity required and the associated emissions from power generation.
